So, why would a person breed dogs for a living? Beats me. I don't. This is a hobby. I have a day job. I am a computer instructor. This web site began as an example for my students. But since I had the site, and I had the Westies ...
Nancy's Westies is a small hobby kennel located in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley. I raise Westies, and only Westies, because I love Westies. They are the perfect dog!
I came home to Russellville in 2001, after being gone for 7 years, and decided I wanted to find some Westies to fill my empty nest. I went in search of the perfect pups, and wound up with 4 of the most beautiful little girls you can imagine: Skeezer, Sugar Plum, Rascal, and Chewy. (My grandkids helped me name them) Almost a year later, I decided I probably needed a boy to go with them, so I went in search again ... and I found Murphy.
Skeezer is my favorite (shhhhh ... it's a secret ... we don't want the others to know) because she's such a pretty and lovable little lady... so I keep a lot of her puppies. The rest of my girls are her daughters. I keep her babies mostly because I can't bear to part with them. And also because I want their genetics for my future puppies. I want to breed loving, healthy, hardy, happy family pets ... I breed for personality and health.
We also have a lot of other creatures on the place. We have Ronan, the English Mastiff. He is our protector. We lost his wife, Matilda, to a heat stroke in May of 2008, and we are still grieving the loss. And we have Willow, the rescue from Los Angles ... we think she is a mix of Sharpei and Australian Cattle Dog ... she looks like a black bat dog, but she's now getting alot of gray around her mussel and she's gotten quite arthritic, poor old girl. And we have Phyllis, a miniture dachshund, a rescue from the local animal shelter. And we have Bugsy and Buster, rescue Boston Terriers (they belong to my daughter). And, my Goodness!, I can't forget Belle, the English Coon Hound. I went in search of Belle to help Ronan keep the stray dogs and coyotes chased out of the yard, and she does her job very, very well, even though she is still only just a big ol' puppy. By the way, Belle probably has the best pedigree on the place. She comes from a very long line of champion and grand champion coon dogs. The fella I bought her from was quite disappointed that I only wanted her as a 'yard dog' and didn't intend to hunt any 'coons' with her ... and we have chickens (who are now too old to lay) and a one-eyed rooster (who is still young enough to crow!) and every stray cat the animal shelter could talk me into taking (which is several!)
You'll find some of my favorite pictures below, of our 'critters' and our beautiful state of Arkansas. Please enjoy!
More later ...
